how to respect your private work before it becomes public
Have you ever felt your own achievements pale in comparison to someone else's public success? It's a common feeling. You open your phone and see someone else's promotion, their new home, or an announcement that garners hundreds of comments. Then you look at your own week: an early alarm, one difficult page written, a call you finally made, practice sessions nobody witnessed.
The Real Issue: Feeling Invisible
Their results are easy to see and celebrate. Yours might still look like a list of small, unremarkable tasks. This can sting, making you question if your efforts are worthwhile. But here's the truth: a public milestone can become a scoreboard for a race you never chose.
Why the Usual Framing Fails
You don't have their starting point, priorities, costs, or reasons for running. So their visible result cannot tell you whether your week was well spent. Measuring your life against someone else's visible achievements is a flawed comparison. It doesn't account for the private work that aligns with your own values and goals.
The Move: A Personal Measure
Before you compare your progress to others, read one line from your own record. Ask yourself: did I keep a commitment that serves the life I want? If yes, give it weight. If no, choose one commitment to keep tomorrow. Don't punish yourself with somebody else's finish line.
